World Environment Day

World Environment Day

The theme for this years, World Environment Day (2024) is ‘Generation Restoration’ highlighting that that we cannot turn back time, to undo the damage that has already destroyed parts of our planet, but we can re-grow forests, revive water sources and bring back soils, stating that ‘We are the generation that can make peace with the land’.

As manufacturers of cashmere fabrics and accessories since 1767, we understand the importance of sustainable practises. The modern cashmere industry faces many challenges. From political transitions to international demand for this luxury fibre, which have prompted dramatic increases in cashmere goat populations. In the 1990s, the population stood at 5 million, today it has increased to 27 million. Additionally, changing land use practices, and climate change, has led to overgrazed and degraded pastures that are less able to support both domestic livestock and native wildlife. In Mongolia alone, 70% of the country's grasslands are now severely degraded, turning the land into desert and increasing dust storms in the region.

At Joshua Ellis, we recognise this challenge and are committed to being part of the solution. That's why we are long time members of the Sustainable Fibres Alliance (SFA), a globally recognised standard that promotes responsible cashmere production. The SFA Cashmere Standard outlines five key principles:

  • Effective Management: Ensuring herders have the tools and knowledge to manage their herds sustainably.
  • Decent Work: Promoting fair labour practices and protecting the well-being of herding communities.
  • Fibre Quality Improvement: Encouraging practices that optimise cashmere quality while minimising environmental impact.
  • Biodiversity & Land Use: Helping herders understand and protect the delicate ecosystems their animals depend on.
  • Animal Welfare: Ensuring the goats' physical and mental well-being through responsible husbandry practices.

We believe traditional manufacturing can coexist with sustainability and traceability. We take pride in using ethical and responsible processes within our business and are committed to continuous improvement. This dedication is evident in our efforts to minimise waste. Our recent homeware collection utilises leftover yarn to create beautiful, limited-edition pieces. By giving new life to these materials, we embrace the spirit of "Generation Restoration" and contribute to a more sustainable future.
