Just what are the differences between a cashmere scarf and cashmere stole? The truth is, there’s a few.
When discussing the scarf and stole (whether it’s a cashmere scarf or any make/design of stole), there are several misconceptions, and even the most fashion conscious people get confused.
In the fashion industry, each term represents very different things and purposes, and so to make things a little easier for you, we’ve highlighted some of the unique benefits of each.
Scarf v stole
You may from time-to-time see or hear the scarf being referred to as a muffler.
A rectangular or square piece of cloth, traditionally, the scarf tends to be worn in the more wintery months and during the shorter days. In fact the scarf is one of the most popular fashion accessories throughout the world during the winter.
In comparison to the stole, the scarf may be a bit shorter in length and width.
Most scarves are designed to be wrapped around either your head or neck, which isn’t the case for a stole.
The stole is a longer piece of fabric usually rectangular or square, but can be triangular in shape as well. The stole is typically lighter than the scarf, and can be used for a variety of occasions.
The stole might be described as a long shawl, usually worn by a woman and placed loosely over the shoulder. The word stole actually comes from the ancient Roman stola, which is the women’s version of men’s toga.
We can consider a stole as a lighter and more formal version of a shawl. But, a stole may not be as wide as a shawl, even though it is long enough to drape around the body. It usually ranges between 2-4 feet wide and 5-6 feet long.
Stoles are incredibly versatile and usually made from lighter material to add a finishing touch to an outfit. When choosing between a scarf or stole, you may find that the scarf is more thicker in texture.
The stole is also likely to be seen throughout the year as well, and not just in the autumn winter collection. It can be draped across the shoulder on those long summer evenings sat outside, or taken along to the seaside, or as an accessory when enjoying a picnic.
