Established by the Ellis family in 1767, Joshua Ellis began as a clothier before moving to woollen textile manufacturing. In more than 250 years, the business has been owned by just three families. Today, Joshua Ellis is part of family-owned SIL Holdings Ltd, which acquired the business in 2007.

As custodians, our responsibility is to protect our heritage while building on it. This means investing in our people, preserving specialist manufacturing skills and upholding the standards of quality that have defined Joshua Ellis for generations.

animal welfare.

Quality begins long before the weaving process. In our in-house laboratory, we regularly test the fineness and length of our fibres, ensuring they meet the exacting standards of Joshua Ellis. Throughout the process, modern machinery works alongside traditional equipment and techniques, allowing us to combine precision with knowledge accumulated over more than two and a half centuries.

Yorkshire's naturally soft water allows us to keep the use of chemicals to a minimum, in traditional finishing techniques that have been passed down through generations. Natural teasels are still used to gently tease the fibres, creating our signature ripple finish and soft handle.

Every accessory is carefully inspected by our team before it leaves us, with the same skill and attention to detail that has been at the heart of our craftsmanship for over 250 years.

Our signature ripple finish uses natural teasel heads, traditionally sourced from Italy and Spain. Combining water, movement and precise timing, the delicate hooks of the teasels gently brush the cashmere, coaxing and aligning the fibres.

There is no shortcut to this process. The teasels work at precisely the right moment, responding to the fibres with just the right pressure creating subtle texture and exceptional softness that define Joshua Ellis cashmere.
